Project Reveal! | One Room Challenge | Week 1 - Spring 2021

This year, I decided to do a thing. I’ve been following along with the One Room Challenge for years on Instagram and figured now that Heathermade Home is a real live thing, it’s my turn to jump in!

What is the One Room Challenge?

One Room Challenge is a biannual event where designers, DIYers and home enthusiasts work on transforming one room in their homes. (The name just clicked, right?) During each event, there are 20 featured designers and as many guest participants as want to sign up. I’m in that guest participant bucket and I couldn’t be more excited to actually be a part of the event this year.

You can check out the other rooms the featured designers and guest participants are working on here: www.oneroomchallenge.com/orc-blog

There will be so many amazing transformations over the next 8 weeks so I encourage you to check out the other blogs and follow #oneroomchallenge on Instagram. It’s such a great source of inspiration.

Project Reveal

For this spring One Room Challenge, I’ll be getting to work on my home office. It was already on my shortlist of rooms that need to be tackled ASAP so I figured this would be just the push (and accountability) I need to git ‘er done. I also thought this would be a great way to showcase what it looks like when you work with me and to give you a peek behind the scenes of what I do when I’m working your projects.

The Starting Point

This office used to be my husband’s at home work space and he had free reign to do what he wanted to it. But now that I’m doing more design work, I’ve kind of taken over and feel that the room needs a fresh look.

Here’s where we’re starting:

My Goals For The Office

When you’re starting a new project, it’s important to spend some time thinking about your goals for the space from both an aesthetic and functional perspective. Having defined goals helps to make your decision making process simpler because you’ll have something to refer back to that describes what you want to accomplish.

So here are the 5 goals I have for my home office:

  • Be cohesive with the rest of the house

  • Have functional work space

  • Add storage

  • Have a video-worthy background

  • Add a sample board and/or whiteboard

What’s Already Been Done

A month or 2 ago, I needed to make the space a little more functional for myself so I’ve already snagged a gorgeous glam desk. It’s got white snake skin, gold legs, and a champagne colored glass top. I thought I wanted a fully glass top desk because I really love the sleek look (especially when paired with gold legs) but I am not the world’s best housekeeper. Not by a long shot. And I knew the finger prints would be a constant reminder of that fact. The mirrored top turned out to be a perfect happy medium.

The rug is also a new addition that is in keeping with the color scheme I’m headed towards (any guesses? lol). Plus, I’m all for taking into account the sensory part of interior decorating. This rug is so soft and feels incredible underfoot.

The wood wall that you see in the wall on the left side of the before photo is also gone. I was not ever really a fan of it but my husband loved it and I rarely used this room. As soon as it was clear that I’d be spending significant time in there, it had to go.

So that’s where we’re starting this journey!

Next Thursday, I’ll be back with some details on the design plan for the room and a look at what and how you provide the information on your project without me ever setting foot in your home! An easy way to stay up to date on the progress is to join my newsletter so I can send the updates directly to your inbox!
