ORC Week 3 | Design Concept

How is it week 3 already?! For the One Room Challenge, we have 8 weeks to transform a space. I knew that wasn’t a ton of time but figure it would be enough. Now time seems to have sped up since the challenge started!

If I’m being honest, I’ve been working on the design concept for this space for a few months now. My business needed a home within my home and this office was going to be it. The design concept has gone through a few iterations to make it feel just right and I think I’ve finally nailed it.

The thing that feels the best about this design is that it is a true reflection of who I am now with enough room for me to grow into the woman and business owner I’m becoming. So let’s take a look at the details to see where we’re headed.

Design Concept

Pulling my inspiration from the mood board from last week, I’ve created the design concept that combines a sense of elevated sophistication with the high contrast black and white wall treatments with an element of fun coming in through the floral wallpaper and pink shibori window treatments.

Here are the details:

01 | Color scheme is primarily black and white with pink and green accents.

02 | Black Picture Frame Wall Molding - 3 of the 4 walls in this room will get wall black picture frame molding. I also plan to use either white board wallpaper or white board paint inside of the molding on the wall directly across from my desk. Right now, I have my business goals written on a bent white board that can’t really be hung properly and my calendar on several laminated sheets of paper thumbtacked to my wall. So the trimmed out white board wall situation I’m creating will provide a prettier alternative to that. One of the frames will have a pin board to allow me to pin up samples as I work through projects.

03 | Desk - I have already purchased this desk because once I found it, I knew it was for me. It’s got white faux snakeskin and a champagne mirror top with gold legs which gives me serious glam vibes. I knew the desk would be floating in the room so I needed something with a finished back and this beauty had that, too. For me, it’s a Goldilocks desk -- not too big, not too small, not too much glass, not too visually bulky.

04 | Desk Chair - Somehow, my home has become a museum of green chairs and I have amassed quite the collection over the years. Funny thing is, I didn’t even realize that until I bought this green chair! I wanted something that did not have wheels. With the built in going behind the desk, I wanted to make sure I had lots of space and legs with wheels can feel like they’re taking up more room. Plus, I regularly roll up my hair and sit under a hooded dryer while I’m working on something at my desk so I wanted to have space for the dryer behind me. This is the perfect example of designing for you. I bet most people don’t need to consider whether their hair dryer can fit behind their desk but it matters to me! (I’ve already done it a couple times and it fits perfectly.)

05 | Wallpaper - This has been one of the hardest decisions of this whole design! I want the wall with the built in to be a focal wall and a gorgeous video background for virtual client meetings and content creation. It felt like a lot of pressure to get this decision right. At first I thought I would keep to the black and white theme but it felt like something was missing. The room needed some color! And then I found this tulip print with a black background and it was love at first sight!

06 | The built-in cabinet and shelving - I’ll share more details on how this came together in another post. I decided to go with a built-in because so many of the inspiration photos I was drawn to had one. And last year we redesigned our dining room and put in a built-in banquette with cabinets and shelving and it completely transformed the functionality and vibe space. In this room, the built-in will bring attention to the focal wall while providing the storage space I need.

07 | Curtains - To bring some harmony to the space, I wanted to bring in a few touches of pink. These shibori net pattern curtains (that I’ll probably end up making myself) will do just that.

08 | Record Player Table - Last year, my husband and I got ourselves a Victrola record player. Not only is it a record player, it also plays cassette tapes, radio, CDs, and has bluetooth. Any era of music we want to play, we’re covered. I like to listen to something (music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc.) when I’m working on things so I decided to bring it into the office. I’ve sourced a glass, wood, and gold table that complements the rest of the design well and gives me space to set the record player as well as store some of my favorite records.

09 | Bar Cart - I’m not a drinker but I do love a bar cart! I plan to use one in this space as a moveable surface to put samples that I’m working with on so they are easily accessible whether I’m at my desk or at the pin board.

10 | Lighting - The builder grade fan/boob light combination I have going on right now must go. I don’t need a fan, it doesn’t provide enough light at night and it’s just not cute! So to update the lighting I’ll put in a new ceiling light fixture (TBD) and add some additional lighting throughout the space, like this beautiful black turned wood floor lamp.

There you have the design concept for the room! I am very excited about the direction it is going and I know it’ll look fabulous when everything is installed.

Weekly Progress Update

I’ve been able to make some good progress on the room this week! Doing this challenge has definitely forced me to get rolling and I’m so glad it did! This week we:

  • Ordered samples for fabric and wallpaper because I need to get those orders in ASAP if I want to be done in time!

I was hoping to have started painting the walls at this point as well but life happens so that will be on the list for this upcoming week. Along with:

  • Painting the room

  • Staining the built-in

  • Painting the wall trim

  • Testing whiteboard wallpaper and paint samples

It’s going to be an interesting week!

Remember to check out all the other amazing designers and guest participants doing this One Room Challenge!
