How To Choose The RIght Size Rug
Y’all. Go big or go home with your area rug.
I know it can be confusing to figure out what size rug you actually need for different rooms in your house. And you might even be tempted to get a smaller size to better fit your budget.
Trust me! It is soooooo worth taking the time and spending the $$ to get the right size rug.
Think about it….when you buy items for your home that are not the right scale, they’re not going to feel right. That’s how you end up replacing the same pieces year after year.
So how do you know what size you need? Keep reading for some helpful hints!
LIVING ROOM
Choose a rug big enough to fit at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs. For most rooms, you’re looking at 8x10, 9x12, or 10x14.
BEDROOM
You’ll want to choose a rug size based on 1) the size of the bed and 2) what you furniture want to place on the rug (just the bed? The bed and nightstands? The bed and a bench at the foot of the bed? The bed, nightstands and a bench?).
For today, I’ll get into the rug sizes I recommend for each bed size.
King: 9x12
Queen/Full: 8x10
Twin: 5x7
DINING ROOM
Choose a rug that is big enough that when you pull out the chairs to sit down or stand up, they are still on the rug.
What size (and shape) you end up will relate to the table and chairs you select. So let’s look at this in terms of table seating size.
Rectangular, seats 4: 6x9
Up to 60” Rectangular, seats 4 to 8: 8x10
72” Rectangular, seats 8 to 10: 9x12
Rectangular, seats 10 to 12 people: 10x14
Up to 60” Round, seats 4 to 6: 8’ round, 8x10 or 9x12
Those are the basics! There are many factors that go into selecting the right size rug so if you’re looking for a design partner to come along side you to help you make tough design decisions like these, let’s chat!
